Backpacking Checklist

Backpacking trips call for different equipment.  KEEP YOU BACKPACK LIGHT!  It should weigh no more than 20% to 25% of your body weight.


Personal Gear

q       Frame pack  (external frame packs are generally preferred due to the hot weather in the south) with padded hip strap

q       Rain cover for pack (a plastic garbage bag will do in a pinch) (plastic bag makes great night time pack cover)

q       Stuffable sleeping bag.  It is important that it roll up into a small package, and that it be light weight.  A sleeping bag rated at  20° is generally adequate for our part of the country. Finally, consider a synthetic fill vs. down. Down filled bags are very temperamental when it rains (weight, warming properties, etc)

q       Waterproof bag or garbage bag for sleeping bag

q       Ground pad.  This can be as simple as a foam pad, or can be one of the more expensive self-inflating pads.

q       Map and Map Case – Troop leaders will provide each crew with this item.

q       Personal first aid kit (Band-Aids, mole skin, etc.)

q       Small eating/cooking utensils

q       Plate/cup/bowl - you can use a large cup for all three! Frisbees also make great plates. Place the Frisbee in a ziplock bag to minimize cleanup.

q       Toothbrush and toothpaste

q       Comb or brush

q       Biodegradable soap

q       Trowel and TOILET PAPER!!!!!!!!!!

q       Matches or lighter in water proof container

q       SMALL flashlight with NEW batteries

q       Pocket knife – lockback w/ blade no longer than 3 inches.

q       Compass

q       Water container(s) and plenty of water (used quart Gatoraid bottles with cap lids)

q       Small garbage bags

q       50 ‘ of 3 mm rope

q       small pad of paper and pencil

q       Optional Gear

o        Sunglasses

o        Chap stick

o        Insect repellant

o        Sunscreen

o        Watch

o        Camera and film

o        Binoculars

o        Hand Lotion

o        snacks

Clothing

 Avoid Cotton. Wear synthetic materials or wool. Choose clothing for Season. Pack everything in ziplock bags to keep it dry. In cool weather, dress in layers.

q       Waterproof shell jacket.

q       Waterproof shell pants.

q       Hiking boots (Be sure to wear your boots for a few weeks to break them in before going on a hike!)

q       Camp shoes.

q       Polypropylene liner socks – 2 pair

q       Wool or Synthetic Hiking socks – 2 pair

q       Underwear

q       Shorts

q       Long pants. NO JEANS.

q       Shirts or T-shirts

q       Long johns or sweet pants/shirt

q       Pile or fleece jacket.

q       Knit hat

q       Ball cap or wide brim hat.

q       Wool or poly gloves

q       Bandanna

Crew Gear (load is shared by all members of the crew)

q       2-man tents.  (Tent with a partner so you only have to carry one tent)

q       Plastic ground cloth (to go under your tent)

q       Backpacking stove with fuel. (One stove for every 2 or 3 scouts)

q       Water filter – one filter for every 2 or 3 scouts.

q       Cook pot

q       Extra plastic bags

q       Garbage bags

q       Water purification tablets

q       Collapsible Water bladder

q       50 – 75 ft of strong cord.

q       Repair kit – duct tape, needle and thread, wire, spare parts for equipment

q       Food

q       Clean-up gear
